My 1989 suzuki firefly cost me $350. I drive it everywhere immaginable, from snowy mountains, rivers and oceans to hotsprings and deserts. Cross the state and cross the continent. It has over 125k miles. With no modifications, it gets 66-74 mpg consistently, seats 4 and sleeps 2 comfortably, 3x the cargo space of a not-so-smart, hauls kayaks, bikes, skis, trees and washing machines. It fits in a motorcycle parking space and can u-turn in nearly a single lane. It has the original clutch, exhaust, mint interior and windows, a lifetime stainless oil filter $140 + 3.5 qts. amsoil change every 20k mi $30, 2 tune ups so far $10 each, 1 brake pad change $14 (actually one rear set of pads is still near new, so why change it), 1 master cylinder $20, brake fluid $3, timing belt $14, alt belt $6.50, 1 good used battery $17, a set of good used tires $60, insurance is $145/yr. All told, it costs me around $1200 a year to drive aprox. 15,000 miles. That’s less than 10 cents a mile! I can’t find a vehicle than comes anywhere close to the utility and versatility of my trusty micro-rv. Sometimes, I wish I had a little more head room, so I put in a skylight (sun roof). People may laugh at me as they pass by while I’m singing my heart out, then they have to deal with many times the costs and frustrations of much lesser functional vehicles. I stop for every pedestrian and cyclist too.
